What is women’s health physiotherapy?

Women’s health physiotherapy focuses on the unique physical and hormonal changes that occur throughout a woman’s life.

This specialised area of care supports women during stages such as menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, perimenopause, and menopause.

Treatment addresses concerns such as pelvic pain, bladder or bowel dysfunction, painful intercourse, abdominal and pelvic floor weakness, and musculoskeletal changes related to hormonal shifts.

Conditions we treat

Women’s health physiotherapy effectively treats conditions that affect your pelvic health, pregnancy and postnatal recovery.

Urinary incontinence

Involuntary leakage during coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercise (stress incontinence), or sudden urgent need to urinate (urgency incontinence). Pelvic floor muscle retraining strengthens weakened muscles and improves bladder control through progressive exercises.

Pelvic organ prolapse

Sensation of heaviness, bulging or dragging in your pelvic area caused by weakened pelvic floor support. Targeted strengthening exercises rebuild supporting muscles while postural training reduces downward pressure to improve symptoms.

Pelvic pain conditions

Chronic pelvic pain, painful intercourse (dyspareunia), vaginismus or pelvic pain syndrome. Gentle internal manual therapy releases tight pelvic floor muscles and trigger points while progressive desensitisation techniques reduce pain sensitivity.

Pregnancy-related pain

Lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain, symphysis pubis dysfunction and other musculoskeletal problems during pregnancy. Safe, pregnancy-adapted exercises and manual therapy address pain while preparing your body for birth.

Postnatal recovery

Diastasis recti (abdominal separation), pelvic floor weakness, caesarean section recovery and safe return to exercise after birth. Structured programmes rebuild core and pelvic floor strength while addressing any complications from delivery.

Other pelvic conditions

Incomplete bladder or bowel emptying, straining with toileting, constipation, pre and post-gynaecological surgery rehabilitation, and menopausal pelvic floor changes. Comprehensive assessment identifies the specific dysfunction and guides targeted treatment.

What to expect from treatment

Your first appointment includes a thorough assessment in complete privacy. We discuss your symptoms, medical history and how your condition affects your daily life. A physical assessment examines your posture, movement patterns and abdominal muscle function, and may include a pelvic examination where necessary.

Initial assessment takes 60-75 minutes to ensure we fully understand your condition. Treatment frequency will depend o the condition. This can only be discussed once the initial assessment has been completed to provide individual care.
